Online Ultrasound Course Objectives and Target Skills

Module One: Basic: Early pregnancy (8-13 weeks) ultrasound.

  1. What we can do: Brainstorming and Scanning Standards.
  2. Safe use of US machine and correct settings.
  3. Probe orientation, probe care and infection control (transabdominal and transvaginal).
  4. Confirmation of true intrauterine location of pregnancy.
  5. Detection of fetal cardiac activity and embryonic viability.
  6. Measurement of gestational sac diameter and crown rump length.
  7. Exclusion of early visceral, somatic or morphologic defects.
  8. Nuchal Translucency and screening for trisomies and genetic ultrasound.
  9. Doppler applications and uses in early pregnancy.
  10. Introduction to 4D ultrasound applications in early pregnancy.
  11. Accurate documentation of measurements.
  12. Producing written summary and interpretation of results and final reporting.
  13. Communicating normal or abnormal results to parents.
  14. Arranging appropriate follow up or intervention among multi-disciplinary team.

Module Two: Basic Ultrasound assessment of fetal size, liquor and the placenta (18-22 weeks Anomaly Scan).

  1. Safe use of US machine and use of correct settings.
  2. Accurate measurement of BPD, HC, AC, FL.
  3. Accurate documentation of measurements and observations, including chart plotting.
  4. Assessment of liquor volume Measurement of AFI.
  5. Assessment of liquor volume Measurement of MVPD.
  6. Assessment of placental position using the trans-abdominal route.
  7. Arranging appropriate follow up or referral.
  8. Producing written summary and interpretation of results.
  9. Accurate measurements of TCD and lateral atrial diameter of the cerebral ventricles.
  10. Confirm normal anatomy of head and face.
  11. Confirm normal anatomy of spine.
  12. Confirm normal anatomy of heart and chest.
  13. Confirm normal anatomy of abdomen.
  14. Confirm normal anatomy of limbs.
  15. Perform full anomaly scan.
  16. Recognise somatic, visceral or mophologic structural anomalies.
  17. Locate and assess placenta.
  18. Assess liquor volume.
  19. Doppler applications and uses in mid-pregnancy.
  20. Introduction to 4D ultrasound applications in mid-pregnancy.

Module Three: Basic Gynecology Ultrasound

  1. Selection and set up of the US machine to ensure safe and optimal use to include appropriate probe selection and orientation.
  2. Accurate measurement of the endometrium in the accepted sagittal plane.
  3. Assessment of the adnexal regions: accurate identification of the normal ovaries, normal fallopian tube, normal pelvic fluid.
  4. Accurate measurement of normal and abnormal adnexal structures: mean diameter and volume.
  5. Recognise and evaluate common endometrial and myometrial abnormalities.
  6. Recognise and evaluate common ovarian abnormalities.
  7. Recognise and evaluate complex ovarian masses and refer on appropriately.
  8. Doppler applications and uses in gynecology.
  9. Introduction to 3D ultrasound applications in gynecology.
  10. Patient communication.
  11. Producing written summary and interpretation of results.
  12. Issue structured written report.
  13. Arranging appropriate follow up or intervention among multi-disciplinary team.
