Title: |
Fetal and head masses |
Question: |
what is nuchal transluscency? where is the nuchal region? |
Answer: |
Nuckal skin thickening is increased thickening of the soft tissue in the posterior aspect of the neck. It appears as a translucent mass in sonograms. Thats why we consider it one of the fetal head and neck masses. It is one of the eight major criteria for diagnosis of trisomy 21. it is significant if detection above 3mm in a fetus of 13 weeks and 5mm in 20 weeks of gestation. The measurement is taken in an axial plane at the level of the 2 thalami and in sagittal sections of the neck. It is associated with other chromosomal and non-chromosomal syndromes. |
